A New Royal Wizard
Tom wanted to be the new royal wizard.
So did everyone else.
But only one wizard could try out.
“I will pick the best wizard soon,” said Master Wizard.

Practice
Tom practiced lots of magic spells.
The other wizards practiced too.

A Gift Appears
One day Master called all the wizards.
“Each wizard must make a gift appear,” he said.
“I will pick the best gift—and the best wizard.”

Walter Laughs
Walter laughed. “Tom can’t make a gift appear!”
Other wizards laughed too.
Tom frowned.

Fancy Gifts
Wizards made fancy cakes and candy appear.
Golden coins and pens appeared too.

Red Socks
Then Tom lifted his wand.
“I’ll give everyone red socks with dots!”
Poof!

Red Spots
“You fool!” cried Walter.
“You gave us red spots!”
“We all have chicken pox!” said another wizard.

Go To The Palace
“Everyone is sick but you, Tom,” said Master.
“You must go to the palace.”
“I will do my best, Master!” said Tom.

Where Is The Palace?
Tom got his sack and hurried away.
A minute later he was back.
“Master?” asked Tom. “Where is the palace?”
Master sighed and gave Tom a map.

The Dark Forest
“You must go through the Dark Forest,” warned Master.
“It is very dangerous. Make sure you stay on the path!”
Tom took the map and headed for the Dark Forest.
